HOSPICES de BEAUNE, a hospital founded in the Middle Ages, is one of France’s most prestigious historical monuments, boasting flamboyant Gothic architecture, polychrome roofs and a renowned vineyard. Founded in 1443, it was for the poor that this masterpiece was built. A beautiful courtyard, splendid painted tile roofs, skylights at the top. The building was built with the most modern and decorative architectural elements of the time. The hospital was created to care for the poor. Care and attention was given not only to the building, but also to medical care, the in-house pharmacy and all the facilities.
Gifts of vineyards were made by the hospital’s supporters as early as 1457, and this tradition continued for five centuries. Today, the estate comprises 60 hectares, 50 of which are Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay. The care of the vineyards and winemaking is entrusted to 22 vintners hand-picked for this task. The vineyards are of exceptional quality, 85% premier cru and grand cru. The wines are sold at auction, according to tradition, on the third Sunday in November. The sale, organised annually by the prestigious Christie’s auction house, is the world’s most famous wine charity. Proceeds from the sale are used to improve the hospital’s equipment and the preservation of the historical monument.
Prosper Maufoux is an emblematic Burgundy winery, located in Château de Saint-Aubin, on the Grands Crus road. Founded in 1860, the winery has played a key role in the development of Burgundy wines around the world, particularly in the United States.
Its exceptional vineyards stretch across the legendary terroirs of the Côte de Beaune: Saint-Aubin, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. The family estate also extends into the Côte de Nuits, the Côte Châlonnaise and the Mâconnais.
Elegance, finesse and character are the key words behind Prosper Maufoux's style. With a modern, non-interventionist approach, slow extractions and gentle vinification reveal fascinating, delicate wines. Long maturation periods in French oak barrels, with fine grain and light toasting, sublimate the complexity of the wines.
The winemaking team, under the expert guidance of Nadine Gublin, strives to produce expressive white wines with freshness, energy and tension, and lively, crisp, silky and elegant red wines.
Located south of Beaune, in the heart of the Route des Grands Crus, the Prosper Maufoux wine estate extends around the Château de Saint-Aubin, on the famous Côte des Blancs.
Its 9 hectares of vineyards, mostly planted with Chardonnay, are managed with sustainable and responsible viticulture methods, certified HVE3.
The Clos du Château, classified in the appellation Saint-Aubin Premier Cru, and the adjoining plots of the estate form an area of excellent terroir, producing exceptional wines: Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru, Meursault 1er Cru, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru and Saint-Aubin 1er Cru.
