Obtained 100% from the Tocai Friulano grape: perhaps Collio’s most representative and well-known white wine, but since 2007 it has had to give up its name in favour of Hungary, changing it to Friulano. Mentioned for the first time in the dowry agreement of 1632 of Aurora Formentini, a noblewoman of San Floriano, who brought her husband ‘vitti di Toccai… 300’, three centuries later (1933) Ernesto Massi would write ‘the current direction of Gorizia’s viticulture tends to favour fine white vines, such as Tocai’. It has always been present on the estate, being one of the indigenous varieties of the area.
The vineyards from which it originates are Zavognza, Ruttars and Dolgi Breg at an altitude of 120 to 180 metres above sea level in typical ‘ponca’ soils. Training system Cultivated using the guyot system. Vinification Obtained by soft pressing of grapes macerated for 24-48 hours at low temperatures. Fermentation takes place in steel tanks at controlled temperatures. This is followed by storage ‘sur lie’ until bottling. Colour A straw yellow of medium intensity. Nose Very pleasant varietal notes on the nose, with hints of acacia flowers and sweet almonds. Palate The broad palate reveals ripe yellow fruits and a solid, structured progression that leads to a long, mineral finish. A wine with great depth and intense mineral notes typical of old wines and hillside vineyards. Serving temperature Serve chilled, around 8 – 10° C, as this is how one can grasp all its fragrance. Pairing A wine for aperitifs, for hors d’oeuvres, San Daniele ham and various sliced meats, for soups and dry first courses. It also pairs perfectly with Montasio cheese and goes well with baked fish dishes.
Gradis'ciutta was born when Robert Princic, having finished his studies in Oenology and Viticulture in Conegliano, decided at the age of 20 in 1997 to give a name to the work on the land that his family had carried on for generations. First his grandfather, then his father, had bought some land to produce grapes that they then sold to third parties: the turning point came when Robert decided to create his own brand to tell of his passion for the land and wine. The name chosen by Robert, Gradis'ciutta, is taken from the name of the locality in the heart of Collio that has been generous with excellent grapes for centuries and is closely linked to the history of his family: a clear declaration of attachment to the land, family identity and passion for wine-growing. All these characteristics bind together in a double knot and are the basis of all the company's activities. Today, thanks to the work of the entire family, "Gradis'ciutta" has grown to 25 hectares under vine, out of a total of 35, in the municipalities of San Floriano del Collio, Gorizia, Capriva del Friuli and Dolegna del Collio. This choice is not random; on the contrary, given the peculiarities of the territory, it is based on the desire to fully express the characteristics of Collio and its hills. Constantly supported by his tireless parents, Robert has grown the business, obtaining awards for his wines and personal recognition, without ever forgetting the right balance in the relationship between man and nature. A philosophy that is reflected in the character of the wines and in his approach to others. The current headquarters of Gradis'ciutta is in Giasbana, a locality in San Floriano del Collio, where a winery has been built that represents the culmination of many years of work.
