Dominio de Atauta
The Dominio de Atauta vineyard is around a century and a half old, with vines ranging from 120 to 180 years old. This is one of the oldest vineyards in Europe.
Its age, the poor, shallow soils and the extremely careful work in the vineyard result in very small yields. Each vine yields enough grapes to produce less than a 0.75 litre bottle.
The Atauta Valley is located at an altitude of about 1,000 metres above sea level. This allows the grapes to ripen more slowly, harmoniously and evenly. In addition, the wind that constantly flows through the valley from west to east contributes to the low humidity of the vines, helping to avoid diseases.
The planting frame is very narrow, so all the work has to be done by hand, in the traditional way. The soil treatments are completely natural, we only use compost of animal and vegetable origin.
It is a very eroded valley, so even though it is small (4 km long and 1 km wide) it has a great diversity of soils, both in composition and in the depth of soil available for the plant, depending on whether it is in a valley, moor or hillside area.
The common characteristic of all these soils is the calcareous rock that exists at depth, which provides the grapes with minerality and prevents the roots from penetrating into deeper layers.
These orographic conditions of the valley together with the climatic conditions of the area: low rainfall, low average temperatures and wide temperature fluctuations between day and night in the months of grape ripening, make them ideal factors for the cultivation of the vine and the ripening of the grapes.
The vineyard and the winery go hand in hand in pursuit of the ultimate goal, which is to make wines that reflect the essence of this place. This magical place for wine.
